Privacy Policy for I Choose Sober
I Choose Sober (“the app”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) is a shame-free sobriety companion published by BDKM LLC. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, where it is stored, and the choices you have.
The short version. I Choose Sober is local-first. Everything you enter lives on your device. We have no account and no login, we do not run analytics, we do not track you, we do not show ads, and we do not sell your data.
1. Who we are
- Provider BDKM LLC
- App I Choose Sober (
com.bdkm.ichoosesober) - Contact hello@ichoosesober.the-bdkm.com
- Website https://ichoosesober.the-bdkm.com
2. Information the app handles
All of the following is entered by you and is stored only on your device.
- Your reasons (“I choose...”). Optional first names or labels for the people you are choosing (for example your kids or your partner), and which categories (family, future) apply to you.
- Photos of loved ones (optional). If you add a photo, you pick it from your photo library and the app saves a copy in its own private storage so it can show it to you in the hard moments.
- Daily spend and currency (optional). A rough amount you used to spend, used only to show the money you are winning back, in a currency you choose.
- Which days you used to drink (optional). Used only to scale the savings estimate.
- Your quit date and streak. The date your current streak began.
- Reminder times. The morning and evening times for your local reminders.
- Language. Your chosen app language.
- Your daily check-ins. A private, on-device history of your morning pledges, your evening “sober / not sober” answers, and when you opened the help screen, each with a timestamp, so the app can show your streak, savings, and calendar.
We do not collect your precise location, contacts, calendar, microphone, or health data. The app does not read from or write to Apple Health or Google Health Connect.
3. Where your data is stored
By default, 100% of the data in Section 2 is stored locally on your device in the app’s private storage. It is not transmitted to us or to any third party. If you uninstall the app, that data is deleted with it. We do not operate a server that receives your reasons, photos, check-ins, or any other in-app data.
4. No account, no login
I Choose Sober has no sign-up, no login, and no password. You do not give us an email address or any other credential to use the app. Because there is no account, there is nothing for us to hold about you on our side.
5. Photos
When you choose to add a photo of someone you love, the app asks your device for permission to open your photo library. You select the photo, and the app copies it into its own private, on-device storage and shows it inside the app. Your photos are never uploaded to us or shared with anyone. You can remove a photo in the app at any time, and uninstalling the app deletes every copy. The app does not browse your library on its own and does not use your camera.
6. Information that leaves your device
The only times information leaves your device are when you choose to tap something.
- (a) The help line. On the “I need help” screen, tapping the crisis-line option opens your phone or Messages app to reach 988 (a United States crisis and suicide-prevention line). None of your in-app data is sent through this. You are simply placing a call or a text.
- (b) Opening links. Tapping our website, a support email, or a link to another BDKM app opens your browser, your mail client, or an app store. We do not transmit your in-app data through these links.
7. Notifications
If you enable reminders, the app asks your device for permission to send local notifications (a gentle morning pledge and an evening check-in). These are scheduled and shown entirely on your device. We do not run a push server and we do not send remote or marketing notifications. You can turn reminders off at any time in the app’s Settings or in your device settings.
8. Analytics, tracking, and advertising
I Choose Sober contains no third-party analytics, crash-reporting, advertising, or tracking software. We do not build advertising profiles and we do not share data with data brokers. We do not “sell” or “share” personal information as those terms are defined under U.S. state privacy laws (including the CCPA/CPRA).
9. Children’s privacy
I Choose Sober is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country or region). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Recovery from alcohol use is an adult topic. In practice the app keeps everything on your device and sends us nothing, so if you believe a child has used the app, uninstalling it removes all of the data.
10. Your choices and rights
Because your data is stored on your device, you are in direct control.
- View. Everything is visible within the app.
- Delete. Remove individual photos in the app, or use “Reset all data” in Settings to erase your journey on the device. Uninstalling the app deletes all locally stored data.
Depending on where you live (for example the EEA or UK under GDPR, or California under CCPA/CPRA), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your personal information, and to be free from discrimination for exercising them. Because we do not hold your data on our servers, you exercise these rights directly on your device.
11. Data retention
We do not retain your data on our systems. It stays on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app.
12. Security
Your in-app data is stored in the app’s private, sandboxed storage provided by your operating system. No method of electronic storage is 100% secure, but because the data stays on your device and is not transmitted to us, the exposure surface is limited. Keeping your device protected with a passcode or biometric lock is the best way to protect what is inside the app.
13. International users
The app is offered globally. Your in-app data does not leave your device, so it is processed wherever your device is.
14. Support, not medical advice
I Choose Sober is a supportive tool, not medical treatment and not a substitute for professional care. The 988 option connects to a United States service. If you are outside the United States, please use your local emergency or crisis resources. If you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency number.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the app evolves (for example if optional cloud features are ever added). When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, for material changes, provide a notice in the app or on this page. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
